Donnie Darko Analysis- Locations and mise-en-scene

Locations and mise-en-scene

This blog post is the analysis about the Locations and Mise-en-scene from a short clip in the opening of "Donnie Darko"

Throughout the school locations there are many places where some of the main characters are placed. During the opening the main part is at the corridor where the characters are revealed and their personalities are slightly portrayed.

How many different locations are there?
The locations that are shot in the clip are the locations that are expected in a high school. The first proper location that was filmed was the corridor. The other locations were outside the school; the school playground. This led onto revealing the other characters and the overall atmosphere and environment.

What background detail is there that successfully creates the world of the school?
The main location and background reinforces the setting of the school; the lockers and the corridor back the idea that it’s a school. In a majority of teen films many of the characters kick back in the corridors near their own lockers. Also another most common background is the clear separation of cliques in the school area.

Lastly, the most common and typical background location in the school would be the classroom. This is shown right at the end of the clip. The miss-en-scene is portrayed clearly with the board being right in front of the class and the desk being throughout the class.

How is the costume used?
The costumes become useful to differentiate the students from the teachers as students in this case are wearing a set uniform.
